In its basic form, the Q pen is an USB thumb drive with a retractable USB connector, offering high-grade data encryption. The clever clip allows you to carry the light weight Q pen in your pocket, like a normal pen.

Various add-ons are available to extend the functionality of the Q pen:
- The memo recorder/MP3 player add-on allows you to record sound bites to the thumb drive and play your favorite music
- The barcode reader allows you to record barcodes, e.g. to easily manage supplies
- The pen add-on allows you to use the Q pen like a normal pen. In addition, it will record the messages you've written
